How to Host a Soirée in Durham Student Accommodation
A guide to hosting a soirée in your 10–15 m² Durham accom without blowing your student loan.
Whether it be for a birthday bash, a celebratory dinner or simply to catch up with friends, hosting a soirée is one of life’s little pleasures. That is, when done right. Hosting in Durham student accommodation can add a further layer of complexity. Both living in college or student housing feature their own idiosyncrasies and can make achieving the perfect soirée seem daunting. This article seeks to advise hosts and ensure that the next event you arrange will be the term’s highlight for you and your guests.
Food
When beginning to plan, start with the menu. First consider the tone of the night. Do you want the mood to be laid back and intimate? In which case, perhaps a charcuterie board and nibbles would be perfect.
A multi-course meal could be in the cards. Though, menu planning can feel constricting on a student budget. I recommend paying attention to influencers like Saff Michaelis (@overfilteredovereaten) and her series ‘half price hosting’ featuring affordable menus. Another suggestion for those budgeting is to flick through cookbooks such as ‘elevate’ from 2026 masterchef winner Brin Pirathopon, featuring dishes constructed around simple ingredients, elevated for hosting. Checking charity shops or seeing if any family has unwanted cookbooks means avoiding paying full price for them.
Refreshments
Once the menu is planned, refreshments for the are soirée can be considered. I would recommend having at least one alcoholic and non-alcoholic option. Cocktails, especially those that can be made in a batch, are easy to arrange before guests arrive and usually quite popular. A mocktail can be a tactful way of making sober guests feel prioritised. If your soirée is more of a daytime or summer affair, a homemade lemonade or pimms can be an excellent option. Consider wine for a more intimate dinner. Alternatively, implementing BYOB can be a way of ensuring everyone’s preferences are satisfied while also keeping costs lower.
Dress Code

A dress code can be a fun way of elevating the evening, highlighting your soirée’s theme or ensuring that the photos taken are Pinterest worthy. You could suggest your guests come in formal wear, perfect for that sophisticated menu you’ve cultivated. Alternatively, if your soirée has a more specific or niche theme, creating a vision board of outfit inspiration and sending it to guests or including outfit suggestions on the invite can ensure there’s no confusion on what or what not to wear.
Preparing your Accommodation
Decorating your student accommodation can also be a challenge, particularly if you’re tight on money or time. Charity shopping is an excellent way of creating an atmosphere affordably or you could consider upcycling anything you already have to ensure it's perfect for your space. Looking for vases, candlesticks, fabric napkins or table cloths and dishes is a great way to start curating a collection of hosting essentials. Online tutorials for DIY’s can be a creative way of making decorations to gussy up your accommodation. Most importantly, ensure you properly clean any rooms you plan on allowing guests in; nothing puts people off their meals more than a filthy kitchen.
Guest list
Making the perfect guest list can feel unnecessarily complicated. You've planned a delicious array of food and drinks, a well thought out dress code and atmospheric decorations. All that’s left is to decide who’s invited. A soirée can be an enjoyable way of getting to know new friends better, deepening relationships with old or making connections. Think about who will mesh well, if any guests have similar interests and if anyone you invite simply can't stand the presence of someone else on the list. A well thought out guest list will ensure everyone attending your soirée leaves feeling they experienced a company as excellent as your hosting.
Activities
Finally, planning activities for the soirée can be a way off making the event far more memorable for all involved. Some enjoyable, easy activities to include could be bingo where everyone fills in their sheets with predictions for the event, a paint and sip, a powerpoint presentation night, playing who’s most likely or various card games. Keep any activities planned low commitment and flexible. It's a shame when you invest time and energy into an activity that doesn’t end up going ahead, so keeping things fairly relaxed ensures that no guests feel rushed or forced into anything out of their comfort zones.
Hosting in Durham student accommodation is far more doable than many would believe. The perfect soirée will be well planned and decorated, catered to your guests and featuring delicious foods and drinks. Hosting should be as enjoyable for you as it is for anyone lucky enough to be in attendance.
