About Castle & Cloister Magazine

Castle & Cloister (often searched as “castle and cloister”) is an independent, student‑led magazine founded in mid‑2026 at Durham University. It brings together scholars, academics, and students to write critical, engaging articles that connect their degrees with real‑world culture, commerce, and design. Much more than a campus paper, Castle & Cloister positions Durham’s future industry leaders within a global conversation on fashion, food, travel, luxury, and socio‑political culture.

Based in Durham in the North East of England, Castle & Cloister operates with the editorial ambition of a modern lifestyle magazine: rigorous reporting, distinctive voice, and a commitment to quality materials: both in what we cover and how we think. Our readers include students, alumni, professionals, and curious observers across the UK and internationally who want to see the world through the eyes of the next generation of decision‑makers.

Press Invitations

Castle & Cloister is happy to send writers and photographers. If you would like to offer a press invitation to Castle & Cloister, please email Editor-in-Chief Daniel at daniel.alestrand@durham.ac.uk. Contributors are happy to travel within the DH1 area without travel reimbursements.

Press Passes

If you would like Castle & Cloister to cover your event, it's highly important that a press pass is provided. The cost of attending the event must be reimbursed unless explicitly stated otherwise by a member of the Castle & Cloister editorial team.

Food & Drinks

Castle & Cloister is happy to send writers and photographers to cover your venue. The cost of the food and drinks must be covered by the venue and items served should be communicated to the magazine in advance. For additional items purchased, it will be covered by the individual contributor who ordered the food/drink.

Travel Reimbursements

Travel to and from the venue must be reimbursed by the organisation which is hosting the event unless explicitly stated otherwise by a member of the Castle & Cloister editorial team. The mode(s) of transport will be notified alongside the travel budget; receipts will outline the amount to be reimbursed and an invoice will be sent stating the amount.

If you would like to be interviewed by Castle & Cloister, please email Editor-in-Chief Daniel at daniel.alestrand@durham.ac.uk. It's strongly advised to outline the editorial direction you would like the piece to outline alongside reasoning as to why this interview suits Castle & Cloister.

Castle & Cloister accepts press releases; however, this does not guarantee publishing.

Standard Press Releases

If you would like to submit a press release, you can email Editor-in-Chief Daniel at daniel.alestrand@durham.ac.uk. Please ensure the relevant information is attached: dates, contact information and your organisation's background.

Under Embargo

If you would like to submit a press release under embargo, please ensure "under embargo" is boldly outlined alongside the date and time we can publish is listed in the email.

PR Gifts

Castle & Cloister is happy to receive PR gifts sent by companies willing to showcase a given set of products. These do not guarantee an article will be published. Please email Daniel at daniel.alestrand@durham.ac.uk if planning to send PR gifts.

Returns

Castle & Cloister is happy to return items sent if suitable at the senders expense. An invoice will be sent detailing the postage cost and any additional expenses in sending the item back. You have the right to challenge the additional expenses.
